Aluminium recycling is much cheaper than aluminium production even if all collection, separation and recycling costs are taken into consideration. In the long-term, savings are also made on the national level as recycling reduces disposal site and raw aluminium global transportation costs.
Aluminium recycling requires only five per cent of the energy otherwise required for the production of aluminium from bauxite (alumina). The electrolysis of aluminium oxide to form aluminium also requires a great amount of electricity, which is why additional savings are made by the material recycling process. Recycling also produces 95 % less greenhouse gases and leaves a 20 times lower carbon footprint than new aluminium production.
